When a Follow-up Might Be Needed
While The Hypno-Phobia Fix is designed as a one-session approach, some clients may benefit from a follow-up session in certain situations. A follow-up is not necessarily about redoing the session but rather reinforcing, fine-tuning, or deepening the changes that have already taken place. Here are some key reasons why a client might need a second or additional session:
1. Partial Reduction in Fear, But Not Full Resolution
Some clients experience a significant reduction in their fear but may still feel a lingering emotional response in certain situations. A follow-up session can:
- Strengthen the desensitisation process to further reduce any remaining anxiety
- Reinforce memory reconsolidation so that the brain fully updates its fear response
- Address new aspects of the phobia that were not initially explored
2. Multiple Triggers or Layers to the Phobia
Some phobias are complex, with multiple triggers that may not all be addressed in one session. A client might feel confident in one area but still react to a related trigger. For example:
- A client with a fear of flying may feel fine about being in an airport but still feel anxious about take-off
- A client afraid of spiders may now tolerate small ones but still struggle with larger ones
- A client who has overcome public speaking anxiety may still experience nervousness in high-pressure situations
In these cases, a follow-up session can target the remaining triggers or fine-tune the response.
3. A New Experience Reactivates the Phobia
Occasionally, a client may encounter a new or unexpected situation that briefly reactivates their fear. This is not necessarily a relapse but rather the brain testing old patterns. A follow-up session can:
- Strengthen the new neural pathways to prevent the old fear response from returning
- Provide additional coping strategies for managing unexpected triggers
- Ensure long-term resilience against future setbacks
4. The Client Has an Emotional Attachment to the Phobia
Some clients may subconsciously resist letting go of their fear because it has provided them with a sense of protection, avoidance, or identity. Signs of this include:
- Expressing doubts about the process even after seeing improvement
- Feeling "lost" or uncertain about how to function without the phobia
- Clinging to safety behaviours (e.g., still carrying anti-anxiety medication "just in case")
A follow-up session can help them fully embrace the change, address any remaining subconscious resistance, and build confidence in their new response.
5. Generalisation Issues – The Phobia Was Only Tested in Certain Contexts
Some clients feel confident immediately after the session but haven’t fully tested their response in real life. If they later find that the fear still appears in certain situations or environments, a follow-up can:
- Expand the treatment to cover different settings
- Help them generalise their new response across multiple contexts
- Ensure complete confidence in all situations
6. A History of Deep-Seated Trauma
For some, a phobia may be linked to past trauma, making it more emotionally charged. While The Hypno-Phobia Fix can still be highly effective, a trauma-related fear response may take more than one session to fully resolve. A follow-up session can:
- Provide further emotional processing in a safe and controlled way
- Help disentangle the phobia from deeper trauma
- Reinforce feelings of safety and control
7. The Client Wants Extra Support or Reassurance
Some clients simply feel more comfortable knowing they have an extra session available if needed. Even if they have already improved significantly, they may request a follow-up for:
- Extra reassurance before facing a real-life test (e.g., before a flight, presentation, or important event)
- A confidence boost to ensure the new response stays strong
Sometimes, I've had clients who have requested a follow-up session simply to reinforce how well they did during their first session and to take their experience to a new level. I once had a client with a driving phobia who could not leave her house (her house was a large property on a hill and I had to deliver her session at her house). She requested a second session because, now that she'd mastered the basics of driving, she wanted to buy a fast car (she had previously been a racing car driver). She was also incredibly proud of herself and I felt like she wanted me to share in her experience in the form of another hypnotherapy session.
A follow-up session is not about starting over—it’s about deepening, reinforcing, or refining the transformation so that you can live completely free from fear.
